I was thinking of aquanatal, but my usual swimming pool does them on a wednesday evening, when I am busy, and the other swimming pool which is half an hour's walk doesn't claim to do them at all (the Rosie's website begs to differ, but if I did do those it'd have to be once I was on maternity leave, unless my days change in September). My midwife suggested that NCT might do exercise classes[*], but the website is unforthcoming on the subject.

Do any of you lot have suggestions of good classes in the Cambridge area?

[*] or I might be confused, as she mentioned Birthlight antenatal classes (which look a bit hippy to me, I'll stick to NHS or NCT), and they do exercise classes. Including yoga less than ten minutes away from me.

The Birthlight yoga course is quite good - not too hippy really. (Mind you, I also did their Active Birth workshop, which was rather more hippy than NCT - but I felt much less out-of-place there than NCT!)

It's the one at the Meadows Centre, which I think is the one near you. I had trouble with my SPD and being too hot so only went to about half the classes I'd paid for. It's also where I gave an informal sling demo a couple of weeks ago.

That's good to know. The Meadows is really close (and where we had our wedding reception),it'd be nice not to have to go too far.

Thankyou.

Ooh, also: where does one acquire suitable clothes? Even ebay doesn't seem to have anything.

Oh, um, I think I had a big pair of baggy shorts I got from [livejournal.com profile] geekette8 and just wore them and a loose tshirt.

A sudden thought: do you want to raid my maternity clothes collection? I've not kept everything, but everything I particularly liked is in a box under my bed for when we decide to try for Baby2. All for size 18/20 and upward.

I think that (baggy shorts) may be the way I have to go, although I was hoping for something with more bump support. I've never worn maternity clothes before - I didn't get big enough with Benedict - so it's all new and exciting.

Thankyou for the offer, and can I come and play with your sling, too?

Yes of course! I'll email you to arrange a mutually convenient time.

It's funny because the NCT is the original natural-birth group, but their classes are very mainstream. I'm not sure I'd bother as a 2nd timer though--90% of it was general information on birth, and I could have learnt it from a book to be honest.

Does the NHS still do antenatal classes in Cambridge? Most trusts here have dropped them or put them at such inconvenient times no one can take them...

There are still NHS classes here, but they're over-subscribed, and you have to pay now (I didn't last time) so we'll probably go with NCT. I'm not sure I'd bother if it were just me, or Jon and me, but Colin hasn't been through all this before, so it's good for him.

That's exactly the reasoning for me and Tony going - I think I already knew 90% of what we covered. On the other hand, the 'new' 10% included the c-section 'who's who in the theatre' mockup which did wonders for me Not Panicking when having an emergency c-section.

That sounds useful, although I am demanding general if I have to have a c-section.

Holy cats, they do c-sections under local? I was not previously aware of this. I am going to spend the next few hours trying to stop imagining how much fun that must be.

Mine was done under a spinal anaesthetic - I was awake but couldn't feel anything from below the ribs. The theatre staff screened off the operating area from my sight and I lay back in pain-free bliss making small-talk with the anaesthetist until they pulled the baby out.

I saw him within a few minutes and I finally got to hold him about an hour later in recovery. I would have hated to go under general anaesthetic, the side-effects are worse and it would have scared me to be put to sleep without knowing he was ok.

My mother's view of things (she attended me in theatre as my birth partner): http://ruthcoleman.livejournal.com/1508.html

That actually sounds almost pleasant. I was taking my experiences of minor surgery under local and attempting to scale them up...

I also had c-section under a spinal anaesthetic (epidural). Again I was able to chat to everyone and be told as much as I wanted to know of what was happening but they put up a screen so I couldn't see. Robin was able to be there and literally hold my hand. We all had a great time immediately after T was born discussing names as Robin and I had, for absolutely no good reason, been convinced T would be a girl.

I actually got to "hold" T before we even left the theatre. Although, when I say "hold" he was put on my chest but I couldn't properly get a hand to him as one side had a drip in it and the other side had a bp monitor attached.

for Colin's further education, you might like to tell him how our midwife (for our antenatal classes) described the pain of childbirth. Putting an umbrella up, opening the umbrella, and pulling it out again. I forget which orifice was mentioned.

Is that a real thing?

*worries*

No, it is a metaphor to describe pain. Is the pain real? Yes. Is the metaphor a good description? You have to deliver at least one baby naturally to find out. However, lots of women have more than one 'natural' dleivery, so it can't be insurmountable.

It's nothing like my experience. Either that, or the umbrella thing feels different than I'd imagine.

My GCSE biology teacher once told us, "We'll be covering childbirth next lesson. All you need to remember for now is that it's kind of like shitting a melon."

The next lesson, she asks, "Has anyone done any preparation for this lesson?"

One of the kids puts his hand up. "Yes, miss, I ate a melon."

I didn't do antenatal exercise because I didn't do exercise before being pregnant. I did get one of those big balls to sit on, though. Ours was cheap in the Aldi, and I think I gave it to lucybond, but they do sell in Argos, I think. I sat on one at hospital, too, while dilating (until I threw up; this was a side effect of having so much gas and air).

Obviously don't know anything about Cambridge area, but would definitely recommend a pregnancy Pilates class if there's any such thing near you. As someone who was really pretty unfit generally (what with the ME to start off with) I found it very helpful, really good for strengthening core muscles around abdomen and back and working with pelvic floor, that kind of stuff.
