Last night [livejournal.com profile] cjwatson, Jon and I went to Hitchin to see Huw Lloyd-Langton, Omnia Opera and Litmus.

The venue was very shiny - an upstairs club, with UV wall/ceiling hangings, all tribal patterns and stars. It was set out such that wherever you were was close to the stage, too.

First up was Huw. He was on really good form, playing his usual weirded out acoustic stuff - I rather liked his arhythmic version of Death of a Clown, for example, although Jon felt it was missing the point somewhat.

Colin and I came to the conclusion that you like Huw if you're already rooting for him, though.

Next up Omnia Opera. I had low expectations of this, and I am glad to say that they were compeletely overturned. They rocked with a capital SWOOSH. For those of you who don't know, Omnia Opera are a long defunct space-folk band. They play music that sounds like space rock, but is yer actual folk - all sex death and rebellion against the man. Very swirly skirt belly dancing hands. They were utterly in the zone, and they carried us with them. I would like to emphasise very much that they were EXCELLENT and you should have been there.

Litmus. Well, what can I say about Litmus, given that [livejournal.com profile] martinlitmus might well be reading? Actually, they played a really good set. Because I live under a rock, I hadn't previously heard them play Needlegun, which is clearly an error on my part - fantastic.

Other than that, well, there was some needless noodling, which I find a bit boring, but then I'm not really the target audience, and the target audience loves needless noodling. Apart from that, all their own stuff appeared smooth and polished. Generally there was a lovely wall of swishing sound (misty stillness from wall to wall, as Omnia Opera might put it) enveloping us, and, again; you did good, lads.

I'm intrigued....

They're fantastic live. We took Benedict (my son) to see them when he was a tiny baby, and that was brilliant. It was Strawberry fair, which is Cambridge's hippy moment, an outdoor thing, and the sun was just setting, and there was a real family atmosphere. It was great.

Actually, I've seen them a couple of times, and they've always been great.

I don't own any recorded though.

That's true of a lot of things - my ex (Benedict's dad) has an extensive music collection, and I didn't bother because he had everything, but now I have to try to recreate it (or go to his house to listen to things).

Cool! I wish i'd known Omnia Opera were still around; along with Hawkwind, they are the only bit of space rock that Jon managed to imprint me with :D

No, really, you can say anything you like - I promise I won't cry.

I'd agree that Huw was on great form, and it's lovely to see him looking so well. I'd never heard Omnia Opera before, and was well impressed - we will be catching up with them again at the fantastic Eastern Haze festival.

As for needless noodling, it's just what we like to do, really, and, as with our music in general, if anyone else likes it that's a bonus. There's no "target audience" - if there was I'd have chosen one that wasn't (present company excepted) predominantly bearded.

I think what I meant by 'target audience' was more that the audience targets you than the other way round. Um. Most of your fans really like the noodling, I'm just odd in being selective in my noodling tastes.

Does that make sense?

I hadn't expected Omnia Opera to be that good, mostly because the recorded output I'd heard gets its power from the keyboards, and the keyboardist was gone. I'm glad there will be more.

And I'm trying to grow my beard, I'm just not much good at it.

No, you're not odd at all - I'm always surprised how many people like our noodling. And I should point out that we are always delighted to see audience members of the non-bearded variety!
